What does a typical day look like for you?
Get up early to get an hour or so of work done before the kids wake up, then it’s dad duties alongside my wonderful wife until around 8:30 or so when I drop them off at school. After a quick workout, hopefully on the river trails, and grabbing a Together Bar to handle my mid-morning craving, I’m off to meetings or bar making for the upcoming farmers market. In the evening, after cooking a meal, it’s family time until 9 p.m. when the kids finally get to bed. If I’ve any energy left, I’ll do some reading or watch an Orioles, Capitals, or Hokies game before going to bed around 10 p.m.
What inspired you to start your company?
I was diagnosed with PTSD and associated depression 10 years ago, which stemmed from significant childhood trauma over a period of seven years. After being diagnosed, it took several years in therapy before I realized how important a balanced, holistic approach, including nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness, was for my ongoing mental health management.
About five years ago, I started making mental health smoothies, loaded with mental health superfoods, which evolved into more portable nutrition bars for times when I was traveling. I started eating the bars daily as part of my morning routine. The bars tasted great and, just as important, it was a simple daily reminder that I was taking care of myself and doing the right things for my mental health. After sharing my bars with family and friends, it quickly became clear that I wasn’t the only one who wanted a daily mental health bar that tasted great. Before I knew it, I was on my way.
What’s your favorite thing about Virginia?
Virginia has balance. Here you can find a wide range of thinking, a blend of all kinds of people, a balance of all four seasons, and in one state, you can find beautiful beaches, mountains, cities, and a feeling like you’re in the middle of nowhere – all within an hour’s drive. Balance is key.
