Team Excel leverages the power of gamification to improve student outcomes, increase engagement, and inspire a culture of service.
Johnathan Mayo, Founder, Team Excel
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day for me consists of researching and following up with potential angel and seed investors. Some of my day is spent refining our character education curriculum and working with the current schools that are utilizing the Team Excel model. The work at the school level gives me a chance to interact directly with teachers and students using the model to get direct feedback. This has been critical as we build a platform that has the ability to scale. We are also getting direct student input into the curriculum and web/mobile application that we are building to ensure it resonates with our target audience.
What inspired you to start your company?
I created the Team Excel model while working with Michael Robinson as director of Excel to Excellence, the nonprofit he founded to support youth. Witnessing the program inspire a 27% increase in grade point averages for our initial students, I knew the program had the potential to impact student outcomes around the world. My strong belief in the power of social enterprises inspired me and the organization to transition the program model to its own Virginia Benefit Corporation, in order to build a sustainable growth model.
What’s your favorite thing about Virginia?
I was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, so I have always loved the area. The great thing about Virginia is the diverse geography. You can enjoy the beaches, city life, or the mountains. I’ve lived in Virginia Beach, went to college at VMI, and now reside back in Richmond, so I’ve had the pleasure to enjoy all three.
